The check valve was added to help keep some vacuum in the system when the engine is acelerating hard as there is no vacuum while that is happening. Your dads truck is simply running out of vacuum to keep the trap doors in the AC/Heater system energized and open or closed for the setting he is using. As for the tranny thats an entirely different area and problem.
