Well for one thing, a Diesel is built alot sturdier than a gasser. It is built sturdier to handle the extra compression. you dont have an electrical igniton system to worry about, no point, cap, plugs igniton modual, coil pack sparkplugs etc. The fuel is ignited from the heat of compression and not spark. They are MUCH simpler than a gas engine. You dont have electronic fuel injection or a carburator to worry about. The last alot longer than a gasser in most cases. They have alot more torque than a similar size gasser, and more lower RPM torque. A diesel Turns at a lower RPM and most of the time, they run cooler than a gas engine. A diesel is alot more efficent too. A gas engine only runs at roughly 18% effiency from the fuel burned as a Diesel runs at roughly 28-30% efficency from fuel burned. Now, if you take a DOdge truck with a 360 engine, and one with a 5.9 Cummins of lets just say 1990. You take both trucks with a 5 speed OD, and 3.73 gears, the gas truck will probably get around 12-14 MPG while the same size diesel would probably get 20-22 MPG. Alot of difference. The same 360 would be ready for an overhaul at 200K miles while the diesel would not need one till 500K+ if it is maintained properly.
