This is a common problem on the early Ram's. Its actually changing to defrost. When the engine is ran hard the vacuum levels change (drop). They started putting a check valve in place in late 95+96. My 95 Ram has never done this. It has shut down the AC compressor for a moment when pulling a heavy load.

As for the tranny......95 was the last year for the hydraulic shift trannys. Could be a problem with the tranny starting to pop up or it could be the kick down cable adjustment on the passenger side of the throttle body has slipped and is out of adjustment. He needs to shut the OD off also when pulling hills. Its probably not a lack of power issue its just the 360 wants to come down a gear.
