Oh-oh... sounds like one of those jobs requiring a 'special tool'! I hate that! I never have the tool and usually have to adapt and improvise something that may/may not work, and may/may not cause sever blood loss...

Again, there's better help out there than me, but would a spring compressor, like doing the springs of the valves when rebuilding the heads on a V-8, help out? Some auto parts places loan (rent) things out, they may have a spring compressor to loan. They mash the spring down while allowing room down the middle for the valve (in your case, the bolt). There's probably not a lot of room to work with while under the cab near the frame, but good luck with it! I'm sure other's have done this and not lost too many appendages while doing it.

Where are all you ace mechanics?!? Help this man out!! I'm grabbing at straws in the dark here!!
