I agree. The original statement of the guy raises a big red flag to me. I have had nothing but trouble with both buyers and sellers of all kinds of things who start out telling me how they've been burned/screwed/cheated/etc before. At this point as soon as anybody I'm about to do business with launches into a monologue of how he's been cheated, I politely decline and walk away.

I firmly believe that the way people expect to be treated is the way those people themselves treat others. If somebody expects from the get-go that you're trying to cheat him, it's because he would try to cheat you if he got half a chance. Don't give him the chance. I escaped serious damage on a real-estate and equipment deal with a guy like that only because I got a lawyer to make sure everything was exactly specified and all his promises were spelled out in writing and he got paid only after everything else went through okay (which left him with basically nothing out of the deal because he owed so much to other people). Those kind of people would rather haggle forever, make you jump through lots of hoops, and threaten to sue you at the drop of a hat, than just come out and say "I'll give you $XXXX cash for that truck right now if you give me the clean title to it." Maybe he thinks your truck is too expensive. If so, he should offer you less and you can decide if it's okay by you. That would be a lot more honest than trying to effectively knock a few grand off of the price by what he thinks are clever manipulation techniques.

I don't know how many people are interested in your truck at the price you're asking, or whether it's a fair price. I do know that sometimes I put a lower price on something than I probably could get, just so I will have more choice of buyers so I don't have to sell it to somebody who will be a big hassle.
