I'm also from 'up north' and don't get the whole NASCAR thing. Years ago I was attending training at Fort McClellan, AL, and it was over the Talladaga weekend. While some of us were at a steakhouse during the week, a guy walked by with all these other fella's in tow and someone I was with said, "THAT'S RUSTY WALLACE!!" And I, being a Yankee said, (you guessed it...) "Who's Rusty Wallace?" They all looked at me 'cause I'm usually a real kidder, but when they saw the deadpan serious look on my face... they really got on my case about NASCAR!
They needed volunteers for the race to help with everything and they said if we wanted to show up Saturday and Sunday at 5:00 a.m. we could earn some extra dough at see the race. So several of us signed up, me for the money, my buddies for the chance to attend free. While there I had the opportunity to stand right next to the fence near the turn before the grandstand. Just then a pack of cars shot by (The 'Diehard 500' on Saturday July 23, 1995), not a muffler amoungst them, all doing 150+, steep banked turn... every bone in my body vibrated as they roared by and the adrenaline hit a new HIGH for just standing and watching something!! Now, I still don't know who won what last, and who's at the top of the Winston stuff, but all I can say is try to attend a NASCAR event, it's MUCH different than watching them turn left all day!!
