I own a 2003 Dodge 2500 H.O. turbo diesel and it is very quiet. It uses a common rail injection rail but also has multiple injection pulses at idle to make the engine quieter. GM with the Duramax as well as Ford with the 6.0 Powerstoke are all now using the same technology to make their engines less noisy. I have to say that my diesel when warm is very quiet and a pleasure to drive, not smokey or loud. When it's cold, it is still noisey however.
