My 53 B3 is the other way around. I know one hole in the rear main cross member is from the exhaust since it apparently ran for many years with no tail pipe and the muffler pointed right at the beam. Surrounding metal also suffered from the effluent. Also, it has been in Oregon for its whole life where they don't use salt on the roads. I like your salt theory. It makes sense.
