You sound like you have a handle on it, it's a pain, but can you stick something into the hole and measure it verses the transmission shaft end? check depth of hole to flange of bellhousing with a rod that DOES enter the pilot bushing. ANY slight misalignment can make it seem like it won't go. You might try loosening the clutch plate bolts, then inserting it and finally tightening the clutch plate bolts down again. Exercise the clutch a few times to ensure no binding.

I know I didn't answer the Car Vs Truck pilot question, I can't, sorry, just some sympathy for the situation and hopes for a speedy recovery.

You might also just pull the pilot out and check if it fits over the shaft end. It's a pain, but that's what we love about these things. Regards WAW
