A "Kill switch" kills the engine by grounding
out the coil or by some other means when you push
or flip it. I had a push button. With a "Deadman
Switch" you have to hold it to keep the vehicle
running. To shut it down you simply let go, as a
dead man would. In some cases, if the kill switch
is a momentary switch like a starter button, the
engine will re-start when you release the switch
as mine did. It caught my glove, I killed it
by pushing the kill switch, I let the button up,
it sparked, and awaaaay we went. First and last time
it ever restarted.
A deadman switch prevents that.
You can use a momentary three way switch as a
"Start/Deadman" switch combo. Push it one
way, your truck starts (with a normal non-floor
button starter). You then push it over center to
the other side to keep it running. let it go,
it centers itself and the engine dies. Unplug it
and the engine dies and won't restart (if wired
right). You can use a regular three wire extension
cord for your wiring, Cut about 5 feet off, use
the female end in the truck, use the male end as
the wire coming from your deadman switch. Hang
the female end out behind the grille. Plug it in
when you're winching. You can start and kill
the engine from 100's of feet away depending on
how many extension cord you have. Total cost?
$20 plus extension cords, which you can use for
your Christmas lights.
SAFETY NOTE: DON'T TURN THE KEY ON WHEN USING A
DEADMAN SWITCH!! Otherwise you start it with the
deadman switch and the "ON" key keeps it running
no matter what you do out front.
P.S. Tim...told ya I was smarter 'cause I've
already done all the dumb things...
