For what it's worth I used to have a 53 Ford Marmon Herrington 4x4 that had a booster that was connected to an air tank. When you stepped on the brakes you could hear the exhaust from the air tank. So what you have is normal. The booster was mounted behind the cab in the frame and connected to the master cylinder.
