stupid question on shifting

I have recently bought a power wagon after searching for 2.5 years. I finally found a 1947 in good shape for $1,000 and I just got it running good (only replaced head gasket). But now comes the task of driving the beast, I'm having a little trouble shifting (not used to non-synchro). I've pretty well figured out shifting up, I discovered that you can't stay in 2nd or 3rd gear very long if you want to make it, and you have to shift at pretty low RPM, but I also found that you don't need to double-clutch like I thought, I'm I right? But now for down shifting, for the life of me I can't get it to downshift and when I try I have to come to a complete stop and start all over again in second. I was wondering what the tricks are to downshifting and just how low you can downshift to. Also when you get to high speeds the wheels start to shake back and forth, is this a loose tie bar or what, how do I fix it.
Thanks,
Drew
