Engine: HD 318 or straight 6 or other?

I have a 1962 1.5 ton PW.
Engines oil rings are shot, and mechanic says that I should have THIS (the engine in the truck) remanufactured, as it is not a typical 318 but quite heavy duty (HD journals? etc.)
My question is this... is this so called "HD" 318 worth the expense of remanufacturing....or is there a better engine applicaiton, such as a straight six?
