Ben meant Mig welding when he talked about the wire feed, ARC uses the older sticks and takes talent.
I'd check the local trading papers for a set of tanks that someone's selling, and then find out where they were filled locally. This way i don't have contracts with a shop if I'm not doing a project for months, etc. If you buy a set of LARGE tanks, most welding shops send them away for a week to get filled (If they didn't sell them to you). If you buy a set of tanks from the supplier, they will exchange them outright (you can also lease them).
I place Spark arrestors in the line at both the torch and the tank end, to preclude any possibility of backfire. I still get Pops and Whizzes that frighten the neighbors and wife, but Fire is to be tamed by man. A large set of tanks last you a year for a lot of parting out or a large project, a medium set would be fine, starting out.
The larger the tank, the larger the torch = the more Burning capability for thicker metals (small tanks don't burn well or last long). A starter set will handle most work, but if you plan on burning through old frames and thick bolts go with a larger outfit. (Here the used set is a good option) Don't be discouraged by the paint job on a used set, the company usually exchanges the tanks (if they are theirs originally) and you may get any color under the sun.
Verses Gas welding,(a true fun learned skill) a $400-$600 Lincoln Mig welder with a Small tank can do everything. I now only use an Arc welder for large fills and heavy metal (I use the mig to setup part) Don't be afraid to jump in, only HEED ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
Gas blows up or burns you, Welders can electrocute. If your "accident prone" (not trying to be offensive, I don't know you) Then hire out the work, you live longer to enjoy it. Gain some experience at a local VOTECH school, it never hurts either. Regards and hope you find a good deal! Winget
