Things to look for?
Rust on the cowl under the corners of the windshield
Brakes are God-Awful, wheels get bent and look
okay 'til you wobble off down the road. Steering
boxes wear out if the are not kept full are are heavy at best
the sixes have a life expectancy of a flashbulb
in highway driving, the water distribution tubes
rust out in the block and are a bear to change and the heating
problems will drive you crazy if you don't. 24V
electricals are E-X-P-E-S-I-V-E and it's work to
convert to 12V because of the gauges and senders
Gas tanks rust out (veeeery insidiously!!) repeatedly
clogging fuel filters and you'll learn to hate
the vaccuum wipers unless the dual action fuel
pump is perfect. Dual action fuel pumps tend to
leak internally and are expensive to replace and
if you don't notice and/or replace you end up
with 30Wt/88octance "oil" in the crankcase
and no bearings, presuming that you
don't get the proverbial "flash in the pan"
when all the gas/oil mix vapor gets ignited
by a spark and blows your pan off. You also
have no vaccuum wipers anytime you are doing
anything but coasting downhill.
I'm on M-37 #4 and I still love 'em but they're
like the old auntie who's just not quite right in the head
(come to think of it, neither an I)
Oh...also check for broken rear axles. With
4x4 it's easy to miss one. The seller can just
engage front drive and away you go. They're
a bitch to fix if they break at the spline.
Guess where they break:
