Its not just equal length

"Tuned" exhausts are just that, tuned (much like organ pipes) so that the pressure waves from the exhaust creat "standing waves" which produce low pressure at optimal points in the exhaust system.

Will be RPM dependant and tend towards narrow power band. More applicable to 2-stroke engines, but works on 4s too. I don't have a feel for how much a L head 6 would benefit.

Same principle applies to intakes - short "velocity stacks for high RPM and long for low (mostly for machismo on non-racing apps).
