What you hear is each individual engine power pulse. Different manufactureres dampen it differently, GM uses a rubber core to a gear in the tranny, the clutch disc also has springs that help. Some autos had a damping sandwich in the drive shaft- 2 concentric tubes w/ rubber between. Whatever your's had may be worn out, just quit lugging it!
