I had the same problem when I was removing the light switchs on my WDX. I had to resort to "Conan school of mechanics" to remove it.
I wrapped the ring with black electrical tape and then used a vise grip to lightly grab the ring and spin it off counter clockwise. One ring was tighter then the other but they did come off and suffered no damage or marking what so ever.
