Brian,

I have done this a few times.

Special tools are not required just be a little creative and go slow. If you don't have access to a press for the bronze bushings take them to a machine shop for pressing. The main thing and I stress "MAIN" is your alignment setup. The top plate that has four holes with the two rolled up lips is your main guide or gage for the correct alignment of the two case halves. This top plate sets the proper case width and aligns the cases to fit the main shaft and run true to the bearings. The spreader bar at the bottom aligns the other axis to further true the main shaft to the case halves. This is also absolutely necessary for a true center alignment between the drum shaft gear and the worm gear. Without that drum gear center alignment to the worm gear any worm gear adjustment is pointless. I'll get into that later if you want. The last thing you install and adjust is the drag brake band assembly.

Remember the LU4 Braden (M37) fits between the frame rails as opposed to the steel MU Braden winch that sets on the frame rails. The M-37 winch has to be completely bench assembled and very correctly set up for fit and running tolerances. Mount the steel (winch to frame) brackets tightly to the winch on the bench before you set the assembled winch on the truck. If the bolt holes on the frame align with the winch brackets "great" finish bolting it down. But if the hole alignment is a little off (common frame tweak) "DO NOT" loosen the case to bracket bolts in order to fit them to the frame holes. If you do this and then retighten the bolts to the winch you will pull the case halves out of alignment and cause early winch failure. If the alignment is not quite right for the frame, bench it again and add shims between the case mount and the winch halves to get it right.

In other words (3) the top plate and spreader bar are the key to assembly alignment. Second is that complete bench assembly for trueness is required. Third is don't re adjust assembled winch to fit the frame use shims if necessary.

There is more to it but with this in mind while you assemble it you will get it right.

Email me as you have other questions.
