My first sight of a connecting rod was on a family car trip back in the 60s. Out on a 2-lane country road on a rainy day with no traffic we were cruising along at 60 or so and some kid came flying past like we were stopped. A few miles later, he's off on the side of the road with steam coming out of the hood, looking unhappily at a connecting rod and other fragments sizzling on the pavement.
