Maybe back then a rebuild meant grind the valves against their seats in-place, hone the cylinders, grind the rod journals, and install new rings and rod bearings. Maybe they didn't bore the cylinders, put in new pistons or piston pins, mill the head, do the main bearings, replace oil seals, or magnaflux anything. It kind of depends on what you call a "rebuild". Of course nowadays it takes an hour just to get the head off, after disconnecting and labeling dozens of vacuum lines, electrical devices, etc.

I think the old engines needed a valve grind and ring job every 40,000 miles typically. Of course the really old engines had poured babbitt rod and main bearings, and I doubt they could do that in-frame.
