It is possible to preheat a casting to a dull red, and weld it with cast iron filler rod and an acetylene torch. There are places who do that commercially, too. There is a place in Nevada, Iowa, called Williams Cylinder Head that does this work. In summer they have had men standing in barrels of water to stay cool. It is mean work.

You can also get nickel rod to run in a stick machine to weld it. Short beads and lots of peening.

You did really well with brass, time wise. I would not expect it would do very well, given the end is about dropped off at this point.

A lot of this depends on how much of a project you want for yourself.
