Question about Tall Tires?

I was thinking about tall tires and I might be wrong but would they only be good for faster speeds on flat ground and slower aceleration? Also they would not help you going up hill as when I have to down shift to 3rd with 9.00 x 16s would you not have to go maybe to 2nd with 11.00 x 16s being they are a taller tire? Tires do not give you more HP but do change the gear ratios so the engine has to work harder to pull a load. So if you are running a stock engine designed for the gear ratio and tire size are you not defeating the design of the drive train/engine hp going to bigger tires? I had to change my gears to run the larger tires on my Chevy do to the hills bogging it down. It seems that if I went to a taller tire on my PW I would have the same problem harder to climb hills and my crusing designed rpms would now be slower and not in the designed range. So are the bigger tires just for looks and not realy for more performance on these trucks? Just a thought, any input? Mark H.
