Lonnie, if nobody else has answered your one question, it appears to be a Carter BBD1¼" (a carter remake of the old Ball & Ball Dual) wwith the oddball choke on the left side. The vacuum line would have fed to a power brake booster and would have caused you idle problems as it pulls the highest vacuum when the throttle plates are fully closed (Idle and decelerate). The reeas it sped up when you covered it is because your had served as a choke and enriched the fule/air mix to match compensate for that HUGE vacuum leak. If you lost any of the little rubber bits and pieces they may just serve as "airstopleak" in future leak incidents or they ran through the intake and out the exhaust. No harm done..
