If the spring comes off the T/O Bearing Sleeve and you have enough play in the linkage, the sleeve will not be pulled back with the fork, and that will allow the sleeve to spin causing the possibility of not being able to depress the clutch disk. If the spring is in good shape and good curves on each end, you should be fine.
