The code you mention, in letters and numbers, is deliberately made to look the way you describe. It is a new concept that is part of a mechanism intended to prevent hackers from automatically registering hundreds or thousands of false users via some script or other intrusive program. Hackers should be... well, I won't say that here.
It is not actual text, it is graphics that is deliberately made to look different than typical text. So don't feel bad if you thought it looked funny, it was supposed to!!!
