If you are talking talking about a flatfender PW the welded "plug" is most likely not a plug. On the rear differential on the passenger side is the oil filler plug which is often a recessed type. On the bottom rear face of the differntial is a very small square plog which is the oil drain hole. The other large plug looking thing on the differntial is not a plug. This is an adjustment nut and bolt. It is always welded. It adjusts a small block of metal in the differential that stops the ring gear from deflecting too far under load.

Go back to the recessed one and remove it if you are attempting to fill or check the differential oil level. As stated earlier the small sqare plug at the bottom is the drain.
