Had the same problem with broken fasteners on the front end of a '56 Binder (spicer 44). (Just be glad you have broken bolts in the holes and not wallered-out egg-shaped holes.) I ended up pulling the whole mess apart to get at them. It was cleaner and MUCH easier that way and you can check out everything else on the way in. Studs are better as Willy-N says, same reason you want studs and not bolts on locking hubs.
