Hal,

Working on split rims can be hazardous, but so can everything else we do when working on these beasts, when done incorrectly.

Several (or many) issues ago, Steve Turchet wrote a very good article in Military Vehicle Magazine about working on tires. Try and find a copy of this issue.

I have worked on my own tires for several years without any serious injuries. I have overexerted myself breaking down the 115# 9:00 x 16" tire assemblies. Once you are certain that the air is out of the tube, it can be a matter or brains and/or brawn over age and rust. If you remove the valve core from the tube and wait for it to quit hissing, you have a high degree of certainty that the air is out. You will need some specialty tools to break the bead loose and to remove the split rim. You wouldn't think steel could bond with rubber that tight!

Putting the tire, tube, and rim together and inflating the tube is where the danger lies. Incorrect assembly, worn parts, and failure to take the correct safety precautions are the principle dangers with split rims. I treat a split rim or combat rim tire being inflated like a bomb that I have to defuse.

When in doubt, let someelse who has been trained do it the first time. If you are able to watch them, then you are better prepared to fix the next tire (flats do happen).

Dave
