I remember taking mine out at a younger age.
I removed the floorboard sections, then the intermediate shaft, then all but one transmission bolts. I then got in and straddled the cab floor with a foot on each side and having the needed ratchet I loosened the last bolt almost out, then I kept a hand on the shifter while I unscrewed and removed the last bolt. I then reached as low as was comfortable with both hands onto the shift stick, gripping tightly, I then pulled up and wiggled as I pulled backwards on the transmission which came out rather easy. Stopping short of removing the pilotshaft completely, I let it rest on the bellhousing a moment, regripped and pulled it clear of the bellhousing at which time I discovered the backbreaking weight of the NP420 transmission and PTO ! It responded instantly to gravity and dispite all my youthful grit and strength, the shiftershaft slid slowly but steadily through my mighty two-handed grip until the shifting knob met my hand. This was the true test of lower back strength which I did not pass. The decent was slowed but only slightly. As my lower and upper body reached approx. a 80 degree angle to each other, I had to let go. It fell only a few inches to the ground.
I did come up with a nice poorboy method of lifting it back up. I used 8" blocks with a block of 2x8 board set atop them. Side by side I placed them, lifting the tranny to one ,then building up the otherside one block
and lifting it to it and so on till it was as close to level as possible then use plain strength to lift and slide it into place.
