Any flat-towed vehicle will exhibit the "mind of its own" syndrome. If you reduce drag, that is the first step. This is done by removing the front drive flanges (or unlocking the front hubs, if equipped) and removing the rear axle shafts and replacing them with the front drive flanges, to keep the grease in and the dirt out.

Putting more air than usual into the tires, I have found, is the next thing to do.

The truck will track alright on straight travel, but will still tend to go the opposite way on tight turns. Most long journeys are on major roads, which thankfully are pretty straight.

I would not tie down the steering wheel. This is personal preference. I have been scolded for it, but that's life.

You may wish to post your question on the mil-veh email list, (or look back through its archives) as this subject has been thrashed about repeatedly over there. Be forewarned that there are probably as many opinions and recommendations as there are members.

Sounds like you may have a good case to convince the Mrs. that you really do need a 5-ton wrecker.

Just my 10,000 yen.
