Re: NP 420, I removed the short front bearing retainer and input shaft from the '53 M37 NP 420. I opened the case on the NP420's by removing the front bearing retainer and input shaft from each. I went to install a longer bearing retainer and imput shaft from a '63 Dodge PU NP420 into the '53 M37 NP420 case and the bearing cage and needle bearing that go inside the rear end of the input shaft and the nose of the inside mainshaft were about 1/4" smaller in diameter than the race inside the V8 input shaft end, as was the mainshaft. Additionally, the drive gear on the back of the input shaft was just an RCH off as when placed into the hole in the front of the tranny case it was slightly angled the sizes of the front gear in the case and/or the input shaft gear was just a bit too big.
Different ratios in different 420's maybe??
