Speedometer drive gear

I have been without a speedometer since I got my Townwagon and it seems to be the speedo drive gear that's the problem. I installed a new cable from transfer to speedo but it doesn't get spun at the transfercase. The service manual shows the drive but what is involved in removing it to check it for problems? TIA, Ron
