You just never know, and people's memories about why and how they parked something fade with time. Problem is lots of times you can get the truck cheaper if it's not running. And let's say you get it going, it sounds great and all of a sudden the price is going up or the owner's lazy-ass nephew shows up and wants to stake a claim now that the truck is putting around.

If you are getting a screaming deal, don't worry about the engine. Just snap it up but be emotionally and financially prepared for the worst. But if you're paying what the truck is worth to you with a dependable engine, that's different. I wouldn't take god's own word on it without hearing her go first.

Amen to all the possibilities of engine problems already mentioned. Valves often cause problems because the flathead spark plug wells catch and drain moisture into the cylinder. Sometimes it's just a sticky valve that eventually frees up, sometimes you have to pull the valve covers and work the valves down that are hanging up...that's a hassle. I once had the top of a valve snap off when I started a 230 my grandfather had kept stored in his basement. There was no warning, just some sudden bad noises. Valve top went through a piston, didn't hurt the cylinder walls, but what a mess.
