The cam looks like it has seen some heat, can't tell about wear from this angle (near the couch) but my guess is that if the cam shows that much heat scoring, then the lifters and pistons may not be that far behind. You aren't really that far into it yet, but I vote with EddieC, get a stand, pull the heads, and take a look at the rod and main bearings. Any heat like that is an indication that once upon a time something was not going according to plan, there could have been enough heat to take the spring out of the rings also. My 318 ran great, I opened it up just to see and found the entire left bank was running only on the oil rings, every compression rings had gotten so hot that they no longer had enough spring to seal. If you have a daily driver and can afford more than a band-aide, go for it.
