Jack,

Taper pins are often used to provide exact alingnment of parts before the bolts are tightened. In the shipyard, when the upper half of the steam turbine cover is lowered into place. There are tapered holes drilled through down through both halves. The tapered pin is tapped down into the hole which lines up the two halfs of the case exactly. Then all of the bolts are put in and tightend. By the way, shouldered bolts are also used to maintain alignment of parts.

Was this guy involved with ships?


It is common for the factory (or shipyard) to drill tapered holes when first assembling parts to make sure exact alingnment can be duplicated when the equipment is serviced in the future.
