All of the used pipieline rigs around here go for $1000-1800 depending on condition. Start it up, get a piece of scrap steel, hookup the ground and put a 1/8 rod in the stinger. Set the machine on 100-120 amps, then ground the rod directly into the scrap, like accidentally sticking one when starting an arc. The rod should get red pretty fast and the machine's governor should kick in and supply current without stuttering. You don't need to melt the rod but this is a simple test of function, especially if you aren't real familiar with welding.
