If it is a 360/318 I do not think you can knock it into the pan as there is a ridge there to prevent it you have to knock it from the pan out and it is not fun if the engine is installed, had to do mine but had it out and it was much easier to rotate the block on the engine stand and tap it out with a screwdriver and hammer.
