It helps if you have seen it done well a few times so you know what the engine should sound like. The timing is crucial, and that's something you can hear too. Up-shifting and Down-shifting are different techniques, as has been explained.
If you can find someone in your area (might well be somebody on the forum here near you) who has driven the old crash boxes, it will save a lot of wear and tear just to ride along and listen. When I was a kid I'd climb into the old WC and practice without the rig running.
