Don't try to force it into gear. Just sorta "rest" the gearshift where the gear should be with light pressure. When the transmission is at the right speed it will pull it into the gear.
In many cases it is easier to just not use the clutch. As you speed up put some light pressure on the gearshift and back down on the throttle. When the right speed is reached it will move out of gear. Wait a second or so and bump it into the next gear without using the clutch. It can help a lot with understanding the timing.
