At the air show last year at Pax River NAS (near my home) I talked to a mechanic who was standing next to the A-10 he serviced. He showed me the rotary cannon. He said how the pilot could only squeeze off short bursts because the enormous backward thrust generated could cause the aircraft to slow dangerously down. The other neat thing is that the cannon is timed so that the barrel that fires is the one that has rotated to the aircraft's midline. That way the forces generated are not off center! Neat technology for an older aircraft.
