Not sure of the chemistry, but we have run 100 octane low lead in my son's drag car for a number of years. A couple of race engine builders have said they would not use avgas as it ran to hot. Weh have experienced no problems with this fuel. It is usually around 110 actual octane and occasionaly as high as 114. Because aircraft go to higher altitudes it is less volatile to avoid "boiling" at reduced vapor pressures. Usually this is accomplished by using more benzine in the mix of hydrocarbons. You can smell a more acrid exhaust gas with avgas as compared to pump gas. The lowering of octane rating to achieve the reduction of oxides of nitrogen has by coincidence reduced the vapor pressure of pump gas and some aircraft are permitted to use 87 octane car gas instead of the original 87 octane avgas. The tetraethyllead used to avoid knock usually lubricates the valves and extends life rather than shortens. BOB
