I streached a rod once by racing an engine, the bearing had just enough wear (Found at teardown) that the piston was able to reach the last thousandth of an inch to the well warmed plug. The hole looked similar, but the rest of the damage was likely the pieces of the piston crushing against the head at TDC. Check the bearing out for wear while you have the engine apart (your replacing them anyway I would assume) This could also happen if someone had shaved the block or the head, decreasing the clearence. Of course if the plug electrode was still intact, all this is moot. The mixture would likely be the culprit. Sorry for your temporary loss. Hope it's better soon. WAW
