M37 won't run fast without lots of choke

My '52 M37 starts and idles fine, but no matter how warmed up it is, it dies when I open
the throttle unless I give it alot of choke. It does this even if I try to increase the
speed very slowly. If I get it running fast and then slowly push the choke in, it starts
missing and eventually dies. I took the distributor apart and replace a broken centrifugal
advance spring with no improvement. I took the carb apart and looked it over and cleaned
it pretty well. I can't seen to get a carb kit anywhere, though, so maybe a gasket is leaky
or something. There wasn't any gunk in the bowl. The carb is a Carter WA-1. The aluminum
tag on the bowl screw says E-7. It is a straight downdraft carb without the gooseneck intake
of the ETW1 and without a governor as far as I can tell. Does anyone have any experience
with this carb? Should it work on this truck? Or am I overlooking some other problem.
Oh, and the engine's pretty tired. Dry compression ranges from 60-100 pounds, but it sounds
smooth when it's running. Thanks for any ideas.
