Sure, you can install an electric winch. The stock winch was driven by a driveshaft from a gear thing on the side of the transmission (called a PTO for power take-off). There was even a lever in the cab to engage the power unit. M-37s with winches had an extended and split front bumper.
On my Dodge 318 conversion, I had an alignment problem with the PTO driveshaft, so I traded the MU2 winch for a 9,000-lb. electric. I'm happy.
