Thanks for setting up the PW discussion group, Joe. It will be great to have a place online to network with other PW enthusiasts and get answers to those little nagging questions, like: will 4.89 gears from a 1/2 ton WC fit into a WM300 axle? Not that I'd want to take material away from Gordon Maney's Power Wagon Advertiser, which is an excellent magazine. For those who haven't seen it, it's a must have periodical.
Regarding the switch to 4.89 gears, I'm considering the same thing myself. I would guess that there are several questions to ask before the switch. Do you need the extra low gearing the 5.83's offer? And will your engine still push the truck up to full speed, or is it too tired or underpowered. I have a friend who put 38 inch Super Swampers on his M37 only to find that on the Interstate grades he slowed down to 35 mph. Higher gears might do the same thing if your don't have enough horses.
