: I'm about to buy a house with a long (1000 ft), steep driveway. Come winter here in the Northeast, it would be nice to have a plow of some kind. I'm thinking that this would be a good time to buy a nice, big truck. I'm thinking that an old Dodge Power Wagon 4x4, 50's vintage, maybe ex-military, would be a good choice. Any thoughts on:

: - effectiveness as a snow plow.
: - maintainability of such an old beast, especially given hard use.
: - cost to acquire one.

The best snow plow I'v ever had the pleasure of operating is the homemade one on my 52 PW.
(you may have seen it in this months PWA)
I plow all winter and have about 15 accounts that the old power wagon keeps open.
The biggest advantage is that you can just ease into the snow and keep pushing, unlike the lighter pickups that have to hit a pile at full speed.
I often get called on to weld up frames and blades on other plows that have been subject to "high-speed plowing", it takes it's toll.
If you go threw with it, find a set of good tires that are "sypped" and give you good traction, or plan on chaining up the Millitary type non dir. tires.
The part I like the best about plowing is that it provides all the extra money to fix up my old truck.
