Message:   Or you can simply replace the entire axle with a 9.25 from a later year truck. The 9.25 has the "stop sign" shaped cover, and is superior to the 8.75 in durability. Someone prior to me added one to my truck. If your truck is a driver, not racer or heavy hauler, the Dakota 8.25 is an option.
The spring perch width is 43", center to center, for a 1979 D100, same as on a 87-96 Dakota, but the Dak axle is not as wide overall, about 2" less, which would move your rear tire centerline in an inch per side. That might be a good thing if you are looking for wider tires. Later dakotas have the 9.25 axles but the pumpkins are not centered.
