Message:   I'm not advocating for one fluid over another, I'm expressing concern that before mixing fluids make sure that your system was designed for the application. DOT 5 can safely be run in older vehicles, however you MUST replace or flush the entire existing system plumbing first. The advantages are nil when compared to the cost of converting.
As for racing, Nascar uses DOT 610 fluid, no silicone is used as far as I know, as most race drivers hate the pedal characteristics of silicone.
A search of DOT 3/4, 5.1 and 610 vs. a search of DOT 5, shows that DOT 5 is used mostly in early 90's gm and ferd American production cars*. Chrysler, European cars, high performance vehicles, and race vehciles primarily use non-silicone fluids. About the last major user of DOT at the moment is the US Military.
*I didn't survey which makes and models.
Again, I have no problems with DOT 5, just with it's application in existing systems that were not DOT 5 systems.
My personal bias is away from DOT 5, I don't like the "spongy" pedal feel or the characteristics of silicon. For use in a heavy truck that may occasionally tow, I'd stick with DOT 3/4, or 5.1.
I use DOT 4 in my Ram, it's what Dodge installed at the factory.
