Message:   That's what I always thought, but according to Russ, Jim and Terry, there is an equal chance of arching from either terminal.
However since there is no chance of a short when a tool touches a ground while working on the ground, therefore you remove the negative* side first, to terminate, or "safe" the circuit.



*assumes that you have a negative ground system and don't have a wrench long enough to make contact with both the negative post and the positive post simultaneously.
